Uncovering Indian Creek

Uncovering Our Potential

For decades, Indian Creek was buried in concrete. By daylighting the creek and creating 6 acres of greenbelt, we spurred millions in private downtown investment and proved what Caldwell can achieve.

The catalyst for change came in December 2001 when the floor of a dilapidated downtown car wash collapsed, dropping a vehicle straight through the concrete into the hidden creek below!

The City of Caldwell used that disaster as an opportunity to acquire the property, launching a massive, multi-phase public works project to daylight the creek in the early 2000s. The very first Indian Creek Festival was held in 2003 to celebrate the uncovering of that initial block.

By 2008, the project was officially completed. It successfully created 6 acres of beautiful downtown greenbelt, added new pedestrian bridges, and set the foundation for the massive downtown revitalization that was soon to follow.

Caldwell YMCA

Building a Safe Haven

In the early 2000’s, Caldwell citizens, in concert with the Treasure Valley Family YMCA Association, began the process of bringing a YMCA to Caldwell. Broad community support brought that dream to reality.

In the beginning, the primary focus was to create a safe place for our young people. The Caldwell Family YMCA officially opened its doors on October 27, 2005.

Good things happen every day at the Caldwell Y! We serve youth, families and adults, all with a variety of needs and interests. Our young people have a welcoming, safe and nurturing place to go. They can learn, socialize and stay active, whether in childcare, sports activities, classes, after school activities or swimming in the aquatics center.

The Y offers a full gym with state-of-the-art equipment including personal training and EGYM. Classes in yoga, activities for members with arthritis and joint health challenges, cancer survivorship, neurological rehab, dementia and Parkinson’s disease and many other offerings are an important part of the Y mission and serve our adult population.

And, importantly, the Caldwell Family YMCA is a gathering place, a place for relationship and community building. It is a welcoming safe haven for all. No one is turned away from YMCA services because of an inability to pay.

Caldwell’s Living Room

Indian Creek Plaza now hosts over 300 days of activities annually, driving millions of visitors to our city center and acting as an economic engine for hundreds of local, family-owned businesses.

By 2008, Caldwell had a beautiful creek running through downtown, but the economic boom hadn’t quite arrived. In 2013, civic leaders and city planners realized that simply having a creek wasn’t enough—they needed to create a destination to draw people to it.

This realization led to a five-year period of aggressive placemaking and strategic planning by Destination Caldwell and city officials. The vision was to create “Caldwell’s Living Room,” a central hub for commerce, community, and entertainment.

In 2018, Indian Creek Plaza officially opened its doors. Today, it has spurred millions in private downtown investment and continues to act as the primary economic engine for the community.

Great cities don’t happen by accident; they are built by vision. Born from a grassroots effort of dedicated citizens, Envision Caldwell 2050 is more than just a plan—it is a promise to our future. Our goal is to harness the historic energy of the past decade and shape it into a dynamic, long-term framework, ensuring the decisions we make today build a vibrant downtown we can be proud of for decades to come.
